Webb measures an early-universe black hole that may predate its galaxy
James Webb Space Telescope observations of Abell2744-QSO1, an object known as a “little red dot,” made it possible to directly measure the mass o...

GLIMPSE-17775: Webb gathers evidence of a black hole shrouded in dense gas
On June 10, 2026, NASA presented an analysis of GLIMPSE-17775, a “little red dot” whose light was magnified by the galaxy cluster Abell S1063. Th...

LID-568: a black hole apparently feeding at more than 40 times the Eddington limit
For LID-568, a supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy that existed about 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang, the team estimates a fe...

Hubble and Webb detect a stellar-mass black hole in Omega Centauri
More than two decades of Hubble data, combined with observations from Webb, enabled the detection of the first stellar-mass black hole found in O...

NGC 4698: the black hole at the centre of a galaxy out of sync
Some 55 million light-years away, NGC 4698 has a bulge extending at a right angle to its disc, while its innermost stars and gas rotate perpendic...

Black holes: what they are and how we know they are there
Black holes are concentrations of matter packed into very small regions. Although they are not observed like ordinary luminous objects, astronome...

Black holes: what we know and what remains a mystery
Black holes are concentrations of matter so compact that their gravity defines an event horizon. Observations of stars, X-rays and light from dis...

Black holes: what we know and what remains under investigation
Black holes are not empty holes, but extremely compact concentrations of matter. The available evidence brings together established observations...
